Let me start by saying this: I DEVOURED this book in two sleepless nights. Lisa Jewell has a way of pulling you into her characters' messed-up lives until you forget to check your phone or feed your cat (sorry, Whiskers).
The good? Oh honey, the CHARACTERS. Laurel's grief over her missing daughter Ellie felt so raw I found myself tearing up during my morning commute. And Floyd...that man gave me CHILLS down my spine every time he appeared on the page. The multiple POVs work brilliantly to slowly unravel the mystery.
Now the not-so-good: If you're expecting a classic whodunit, adjust those expectations. Like other reviewers noticed, the 'who' becomes obvious early on (I figured it out by chapter 5 during my lunch break read). The real tension comes from watching how everything unfolds - like witnessing a car crash in slow motion.
Special mention for Poppy's chapters - that sweet, eerie voice will haunt you. I actually dreamed about her twice! Though fair warning: some scenes with her made me so uncomfortable I had to put the book down and make tea.
The ending...controversial take incoming...left me unsatisfied. Without spoilers, let's just say after 300+ pages of emotional investment, I wanted more catharsis. My book club argued about this for a full hour!
Perfect for: Readers who enjoy character-driven thrillers with domestic drama. Not ideal for: Hardcore mystery fans wanting shocking twists every chapter.
Final verdict? 4/5 stars - loses points for pacing issues but gains them back for making me feel ALL the emotions. Just don't start reading at night unless you can function on no sleep!
