Let me start by saying – I DEVOURED this book. The Guest List by Lucy Foley is the kind of thriller that sinks its claws into you and doesn’t let go until the very last page. If you love atmospheric mysteries with complex characters and a setting that feels like its own ominous character, this is your next read.
The Good Stuff: Foley absolutely nails the creepy, isolated island vibe. The fictional Irish island with its crumbling cliffs and howling winds isn’t just a backdrop – it feels alive, almost like it’s orchestrating the drama itself. The multiple POVs (Jules the bride, her troubled sister Olivia, the enigmatic Hannah, etc.) add layers to the mystery, making you question everyone’s motives. And that twist ending? *Chef’s kiss* – didn’t see it coming.
Real Talk: The first third is a slow burn (like, ‘is-this-going-anywhere?’ slow), but stick with it. Once secrets start unraveling at the wedding rehearsal dinner, it becomes unputdownable. Also, fair warning: some characters are SO infuriating (looking at you, smarmy groom Will) that you’ll fantasize about pushing them off those cliffs yourself.
Who It’s For: Fans of Agatha Christie-style closed-circle mysteries but with modern grit à la Big Little Lies. Perfect for reading under a blanket with storm sounds playing in the background – extra points if your own family drama feels tame by comparison.
The Verdict: 4.5/5 stars. Minus half a star for overusing ‘boys will be boys’ as a plot crutch (we get it, toxic masculinity is bad). Still, one of the most immersive thrillers I’ve read this year – just don’t start it on a work night unless you enjoy functioning on caffeine and suspense.
