Let me start by saying that this aquarium gravel is not as white as advertised. When I first opened the package, I was surprised to see a tan-colored sand instead of the bright white shown in the product images. However, once placed in my tank under proper lighting, it did create a pleasant natural look that grew on me over time.
The gravel comes pre-wet with what's claimed to be beneficial bacteria solution. While I'm skeptical about the bacterial claims, I did appreciate that it helped with instant cycling. My water did cloud up initially (for about a day), but cleared nicely by the next morning without any additional treatment.
Where this product really shines is in small betta tanks (2.5 gallons or less). The fine texture is perfect for bettas to play in, and it provides good anchorage for live plants. However, be warned - you'll need multiple bags for anything larger than a very small setup.
Maintenance is relatively easy, though waste does tend to sit on top rather than sinking through like with coarser substrates. The natural composition means you'll occasionally find bits of organic matter mixed in - definitely rinse thoroughly before use!
For those wanting true white sand or needing large quantities, this isn't your best choice. But if you're setting up a small planted betta tank and don't mind a more natural look, it's worth considering - especially if you can get past the initial color disappointment.
