Let's cut to the chase - if you already own the 2014 Blu-ray of Hitchcock's 'The Birds,' this 2016 'Collectible Pop Art Series' re-release offers zero technical upgrades. Same transfer, same special features. The only changes? A groovy new cover (for aging hipsters) and the removal of the expired Digital HD copy.
The 4K presentation does look stunning though - those terrifying bird attacks have never been more crisp. Watching Tippi Hedren's famous schoolhouse scene in ultra HD makes you appreciate how groundbreaking those effects were in 1963. The lack of musical score becomes even more unsettling when you can hear every rustling feather in perfect clarity.
Here's where this release frustrates me: Universal had a golden opportunity to include deleted scenes or new bonus features (where's that rumored alternate ending footage?), but instead gave us what feels like a cash grab. That said, if you're building a Hitchcock collection and don't own any version, this is still one of cinema's great thrillers - just don't expect bells and whistles beyond the gorgeous packaging.
Pro tip: The included Blu-ray is identical to previous releases, right down to missing the 'Resume Play' function - meaning if your viewing gets interrupted by (ironically) actual birds outside your window, you'll have to manually fast-forward back to your spot.
