Let me start by saying this gravel is GORGEOUS. The deep black color makes fish and plants pop like they're on a runway. My orange betta, Mr. Bubbles, looks like a tiny aquatic supermodel against it.
But oh boy, the rinsing process! I spent 45 minutes washing these pebbles and still got black hands like I'd been digging coal. Pro tip: Use a colander (not a strainer - learned that the hard way) and rinse OUTSIDE unless you want your sink looking like an oil spill.
The quality is premium though - no sharp edges to hurt delicate fins. My corydoras catfish love sifting through them. They also work surprisingly well for my humidity-loving monstera plant's pebble tray (after thorough washing!).
Biggest surprise? Under blue LED lights, any mixed-in colored pebbles glow like mini neon signs! My neon tetras seem to party harder with this rave-like effect.
Watch out for two things: 1) The black dust will temporarily turn your filter media Goth-black (it clears up). 2) Shop around - I later found identical gravel cheaper at PetCo. Still, for the natural look and pH stability, I'd buy again... just with more patience during setup!
