If you're looking for a movie that delivers non-stop laughs while also warming your heart, 'Planes, Trains and Automobiles' is the perfect pick. Steve Martin and John Candy's chemistry is pure magic - their comedic timing is flawless, and their contrasting personalities create hilarious situations that still hold up decades later.
The film follows Neal Page (Steve Martin), a stressed businessman trying to get home for Thanksgiving, who gets stuck with the overly chatty shower curtain ring salesman Del Griffith (John Candy). What follows is a series of increasingly absurd travel mishaps that will have you laughing out loud.
What makes this movie special isn't just the comedy though. There's genuine heart beneath all the laughs. The scene where Del reveals his loneliness gets me every time - John Candy delivers it with such vulnerability that it adds depth to what could have been just another slapstick comedy.
The Blu-ray transfer looks fantastic for an 80s film. Colors pop nicely, though some scenes show slight waxy skin tones from digital noise reduction. The 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio makes those famous scenes - like Steve Martin's airport meltdown - sound crisp and clear.
The special features are where this release really shines. The tribute to John Candy is especially moving, reminding us what a talented performer we lost too soon. The deleted 'Airplane Food' scene is hilarious - I can see why it was cut for pacing, but it's great to finally see it after all these years.
My only complaint? The lack of a commentary track feels like a missed opportunity. But with both Hughes and Candy gone, I understand why they focused on the excellent retrospective features instead.
Whether you're watching for the first time or revisiting an old favorite, this Blu-ray release does justice to one of the greatest buddy comedies ever made. It's become a Thanksgiving tradition in my household - just maybe skip the rental car scene if kids are around!
