Let me start by saying, as a parent, the myFirst Fone R2 smartwatch initially felt like a dream come true. The idea of being able to track my child's location, call them anytime, and even video chat was incredibly appealing. And honestly, the Macaron Pink color is adorable - my daughter was thrilled when she saw it!
The setup process was surprisingly smooth (contrary to some reviews). Downloading the myFirst Circle app and syncing accounts took about 10 minutes. I particularly appreciate how intuitive the interface is - both for me as the parent and for my tech-savvy 8-year-old.
Where this watch really shines is in its safety features. The real-time GPS tracking gives me genuine peace of mind when my daughter's at school or playing outside. I've set up Safe Zones around our home and her school, and getting instant alerts when she leaves these areas has been invaluable. The SOS button is another standout feature - knowing she can instantly alert me in an emergency without accidentally calling 911 (a real concern with other devices) is reassuring.
However, it's not all sunshine and rainbows. The GPS accuracy can be hit-or-miss - sometimes showing her location perfectly, other times placing her blocks away from where she actually is. The video call quality is... let's say 'retro pixelated' rather than HD. And while battery life generally lasts a full day with moderate use, heavy GPS tracking or music playback drains it surprisingly fast.
The $12/month eSIM plan feels a bit steep compared to family-share phone plans, but having a dedicated connection just for her watch does eliminate any concerns about data overages on our family plan.
Entertainment-wise, my daughter loves taking photos with the 5MP camera (though quality is basic) and changing watch faces with the included stickers. The step counter has actually motivated her to be more active - she gets genuinely excited about meeting her daily goals!
Durability has been impressive so far - after two months of daily wear (including several playground adventures), there's not a scratch on it. The band stays securely fastened better than I expected from a kids' device.
Would I recommend it? For parents wanting their first grader's introduction to connected devices, absolutely - despite its flaws. But if your child is nearing tween years or needs more advanced features, you might want to consider alternatives or be prepared to upgrade sooner than later.
