If you're a fan of apocalyptic novels but tired of the same old zombie tropes, Return: A New World, Book 2 by O'Brien is a breath of fresh air. This series takes the genre to new heights with its unique take on 'zombies'—introducing the terrifying Night Runners. Trust me, they're nothing like the brain-eating shufflers you're used to.
The first book had a slow start, but this second installment truly hits its stride. The action is relentless, and the survival tactics are so detailed you'll feel like you're learning real-world skills. As someone who's read countless apocalyptic stories, I was pleasantly surprised by the unexpected twists O'Brien throws in.
One standout feature is the occasional first-person perspective from the Night Runners themselves. It’s a rare and refreshing technique that adds depth to the story. If you loved Timothy by Mark Tufo, you'll appreciate this similar approach.
Some readers might find O'Brien’s detailed descriptions excessive, but I loved them. His military background shines through, making every mission and survival tactic feel authentic. If you prefer fast-paced, no-brainer reads, this might not be for you—but if you crave a story that’s both thrilling and educational, dive in.
The characters are another highlight. Jack, his son, and his girlfriend form a compelling trio, though I do wish some of the supporting cast had more development. That said, Jack’s 'fixer' personality—typical of military pilots—makes his risky decisions believable and keeps the tension high.
By the end of this book, I was completely hooked. The series only gets better from here, and I can’t wait for the next installment. If you’ve made it past Book 1, stick with it—you won’t regret it!
