Let me tell you, this book completely surprised me! At first glance, I thought Lee would be your typical grumpy older character based on the first book's description. Boy, was I wrong! The way he hides behind different personas to protect his heart adds such fascinating depth to the story.
The age gap between Sonia (late 20s) and Lee (mid-50s) initially gave me pause, but the author handles this beautifully in true Christian romance fashion. What could have been awkward becomes a touching exploration of love beyond numbers.
One of my favorite moments? When Lee volunteers as Santa! His big-hearted nature shines through in these community scenes. And Duke - oh my goodness, that spunky dog nearly stole every scene he was in!
The communication struggles between Sonia and Lee felt painfully real. I found myself yelling at my Kindle "Just talk to each other already!" But these misunderstandings create delicious tension that keeps you turning pages late into the night.
As someone who always ignores unknown callers, Sonia's voicemail lesson hit home for me. It's these small, relatable moments that make the characters feel like real people you might know.
The Christian elements are woven in naturally - never preachy, just an authentic part of the characters' lives. The holiday scenes especially warmed my heart with their messages of faith and giving.
While it's part of a series, this stands perfectly on its own. Though fair warning - after finishing Lee and Sonia's story, you'll absolutely want to go back for book one!
