Let's start with the obvious - this book hooks you from the very first page. The premise of a husband disappearing with just a cryptic note ('Protect Her') is intriguing enough, but Laura Dave manages to weave an entire universe of suspense and emotion around it.
The relationship between Hannah and Bailey is the heart of this story. As a stepmother myself, I found their evolving dynamic painfully real - the resentment, the tentative trust-building, and ultimately that moment when Bailey realizes Hannah is truly in her corner. Dave captures these nuances beautifully.
Now for the mystery elements - they're compelling but require some suspension of disbelief. The Texas setting details (while mostly accurate) do have some odd inconsistencies that locals will spot immediately. That said, the pacing is excellent - I finished it in two sittings because I simply had to know what happened to Owen.
The emotional payoff at the end is worth every page. Hannah's ultimate sacrifice for Bailey is both heartbreaking and uplifting. While some plot points feel slightly far-fetched (the mob subplot especially), the core relationships feel authentic enough to carry you through.
Would I recommend it? Absolutely - especially for book clubs looking for something discussable. Just be prepared to lose a weekend once you start reading!
