Let me start by saying this book had me hooked from the very first page. The emotional rollercoaster between Hannah and Bailey is something that stays with you long after you've turned the last page. The way Laura Dave portrays their complicated relationship is nothing short of brilliant.
One of the standout features for me was the unexpected twist at the end. Just when you think you've figured it all out, Dave throws a curveball that leaves you reeling. It's rare to find a book that keeps you guessing until the very last moment, but this one delivers in spades.
That said, I did have some issues with the geographical inaccuracies, especially concerning Austin. As someone familiar with the area, I noticed several inconsistencies that pulled me out of the story momentarily. The mislabeling of landmarks and incorrect descriptions of local spots were distracting at times.
What truly shines in this novel are the characters. Hannah's strength and determination to protect Bailey, despite their rocky relationship, is heartwarming. The evolution of their bond from mistrust to mutual respect is beautifully portrayed and feels incredibly authentic.
The pacing is perfect - not too slow to bore you, not too fast to confuse you. I found myself reading late into the night because I just had to know what happened next. And that ending? Absolutely worth every sleep-deprived morning it caused.
While some plot elements involving the mob felt slightly far-fetched (mafia in Texas?), they didn't detract significantly from my overall enjoyment. If anything, they added an extra layer of drama that kept things interesting.
Would I recommend this book? Absolutely - especially if you enjoy emotional dramas with a healthy dose of mystery. Just be prepared for some sleepless nights because once you start reading, putting it down becomes nearly impossible.
