Let me start by saying the Fosi Audio ZD3 has completely changed my perspective on what's possible in budget audio gear. After two weeks of daily use, I'm convinced this little box punches way above its price tag.
The build quality immediately impressed me - it's solid, compact, and looks far more expensive than it is. That sleek design matches perfectly with my Fosi ZA3 amplifier (they're practically made for each other).
Where this DAC really shines is in its versatility. I've used every input - Bluetooth for casual listening, USB for my computer audio setup, optical from my TV, and even the unique HDMI ARC connection. All worked flawlessly with no noticeable lag or sync issues.
The sound quality? Absolutely stunning after about 50 hours of burn-in. The soundstage opened up beautifully - wide, deep, and incredibly detailed. With the stock TI op-amps, I got clean, precise sound with almost sub-sonic bass. When I swapped to the included NJR op-amps (a 5-minute job), the sound became warmer and more lush - perfect for my bookshelf speakers.
A game-changing upgrade was adding a $55 linear power supply from AliExpress. Suddenly the highs became cleaner, bass more articulate, and instruments gained even better texture. While not necessary, it takes performance to another level.
The OLED display is cute but honestly too small to read from across the room - my only real complaint. And while some might miss tone controls, I found the sound so well-balanced I didn't need them.
For anyone building a budget hi-fi system or upgrading their PC audio setup, this DAC is an absolute steal. The ability to customize sound through op-amp rolling makes it endlessly tweakable to your preferences. Five stars from me!
