Let me start by saying - this wooden box is *chef's kiss*. It feels luxurious, keeps the pastels secure, and looks gorgeous on my art desk. The hinges are sturdy, and the dividers prevent colors from smudging together. Major upgrade from my old plastic trays!
The pigment quality? Mostly fantastic. About 90% of the colors apply like butter - rich, creamy, and blend beautifully with just finger smudging. That burnt sienna? Perfect for sunset sketches. The mint green? Divine for ocean scenes. But fair warning - some lighter shades (looking at you, pale yellow) require heavier pressure.
Where these truly shine is landscapes. I recently did a Grand Canyon study (much like another reviewer mentioned) and layering the reds/oranges created incredible depth. The soft texture makes cloud blending effortless too - no harsh lines unless you want them.
Now the not-so-great: A few pastels arrived with minor chips (about 5 out of 100). Not a dealbreaker since they're still usable, but disappointing at this price point. Also, while most colors are vibrant, some cheaper sets actually have stronger pigments in the blues/purples range.
Cleanup is surprisingly easy - just a damp cloth for my hands and table. The wooden case prevents dust better than open trays too. After three months of near-daily use, only about 1/4" has worn down on my most-used earth tones.
Final verdict? Ideal for intermediate artists or dedicated beginners. The case alone justifies half the cost, and the color selection sparks joy every time I open it. Just temper expectations on pigment intensity for certain hues.
