Okay, so I finally watched Battle Royale in 4K and HOLY CRAP this movie is insane! The picture quality is so crisp you can see every drop of fake blood (and there's a LOT).
The premise is bonkers - Japanese government forces a class of teens to fight to the death? And they have exploding collars?! Somehow this manages to be disturbing, hilarious, and weirdly touching all at once.
Takeshi Kitano as the teacher is absolute perfection. His deadpan delivery while casually discussing murdering children? Iconic. And that painting scene lives in my head rent-free now.
Special shoutout to Mitsuko - most complex 'villain' ever. Girl went through trauma and said 'bet' before going full murder mode. Her character arc hits different in HD.
Surprise MVP: The training video narrator! Whoever thought to make instructional murder videos cute deserves an award. 'BOOM!' lives in my soul now.
400% better than Hunger Games (sorry not sorry). The mix of ultra-violence with teen romance drama shouldn't work but somehow does? Japanese cinema magic!
PSA: Don't watch with parents/kids/anyone easily offended. But DO watch if you like movies that punch you in the face then make you laugh about it.
