Let me start by saying the SCRIB3D Junior 3D Printing Pen is an absolute blast when it works. I tested this with my niece, and her face lit up when she realized she could 'draw in the air'. The low-heat nozzle truly delivers on safety - I could touch it without worrying about burns, which is a huge plus for kid-friendly products.
The included activity guide is fantastic for sparking creativity. We followed the dinosaur template first, and seeing my niece's amazement as her flat drawing turned into a standing 3D figure was priceless. The pen feels comfortable in small hands, and the single-button operation is simple enough for kids to grasp quickly.
However, there are significant drawbacks. Like several reviewers mentioned, finding replacement filament is nearly impossible. The proprietary 2.45mm PCL filament isn't widely available, which renders the pen useless once you run out. I also experienced reliability issues - after about a week of intermittent use, the pen started having feeding problems despite proper care.
The USB charging is convenient (about 30 minutes for a full charge), but battery life could be better. During our longer creative sessions, we had to pause to recharge. While the quick-hardening filament is great for instant gratification projects, more complex creations can be challenging as it doesn't allow much time for adjustments.
For parents considering this: It's wonderful when it works but comes with frustrations. If your child absolutely loves 3D creation, you might want to invest in a more reliable system with readily available supplies. This feels more like a short-term novelty than a lasting creative tool.
