Okay, so I just finished 'Butterfly Kisses' and WOW. Patrick Logan knows how to write a crime thriller that sticks with you. Detective Damien Drake is such a flawed but compelling protagonist - the kind of character you root for even when he's making terrible life choices.
The whole butterfly motif with the murders? Chilling. Like, I'll never look at butterflies the same way again. The medical details felt authentic (no surprise since Logan used to be a pathologist) but never crossed into gratuitous gore.
My only gripe? The alcoholism angle got a bit heavy-handed at times. I get that it's part of Drake's character, but there were moments where I was like 'How is this guy even standing upright?' Still, it didn't ruin my enjoyment.
The dynamic between Drake and rookie detective Chase Adams was fantastic - equal parts frustrating and heartwarming. That ending though... talk about a cliffhanger! Normally I'd be mad, but now I'm just excited to dive into the next book.
If you're into dark police procedurals with complex characters and creepy killers, this is 100% worth your time. Just maybe don't read it right before bed...
