Let me start by saying this: If you're a fan of suspense, Spielberg, or just great filmmaking in general, the 4K Ultra HD release of 'Duel' is an absolute must-have. Having just watched this new version, I can confidently say it's the definitive way to experience this classic.
The 4K restoration is nothing short of impressive. The desert landscapes pop with newfound clarity, and the improved HDR makes those tense daytime chase sequences feel even more visceral. While the upgrade from HD might seem subtle at first glance, there's an undeniable immersion factor that puts you right in Dennis Weaver's passenger seat.
What really excites me about this release is the inclusion of both versions - the original 74-minute TV cut (finally!) and the extended theatrical version. The TV version moves at a breakneck pace that ratchets up the tension significantly, though be warned - its picture quality maintains that authentic '70s TV look (which I actually appreciate for nostalgia's sake).
The special features are where this set truly shines. Spielberg's commentary offers fascinating insights into his early filmmaking process, and hearing Richard Matheson discuss adapting his Playboy story is pure gold for film buffs. That behind-the-scenes footage showing how they shot those incredible truck stunts practically? Absolutely mind-blowing.
If I had to nitpick (and I mean really nitpick), I wish Universal had included some new retrospective material given this is Spielberg's debut feature. Also, while the Atmos soundtrack is solid, don't expect modern blockbuster-level sound design - this retains much of its original mono character.
Watching 'Duel' in 4K reminded me why it remains one of cinema's greatest thrillers. That diner scene still gives me chills, and seeing every speck of dust on Weaver's terrified face in crystal clarity adds new layers to his brilliant performance. Whether you're a longtime fan or discovering it for the first time, this release does justice to Spielberg's remarkable debut.
