Okay, so I just finished Bad River and WOW. Marc Cameron does it again with this Arliss Cutter thriller. As someone who's read all the books in this series, I can confidently say this might be the best one yet.
The way Cameron blends Alaskan wilderness with crime drama is just *chef's kiss*. There's something about reading about freezing temperatures while sitting in my warm living room that just hits different.
What really got me was how personal this story felt. Cutter's hunt for answers about his brother's death had me emotionally invested from page one. And that scene in Barrow? Chilling (pun totally intended).
The action sequences are intense but never feel over-the-top. Like when Cutter and Teariki are tracking that predator - I literally couldn't put the book down during those chapters.
Also, can we talk about how educational these books are? I've learned so much about Alaska's native cultures and survival techniques without feeling like I'm reading a textbook. The food storage details were oddly fascinating!
Fair warning though - there are some heavy themes here dealing with sexual violence and trauma. Cameron handles it tastefully but it might be triggering for some readers.
If you're new to the series, I'd recommend starting from book one. But if you're already a fan? Buckle up because this installment delivers everything you love about Arliss Cutter plus some major character development.
Final verdict: 5/5 stars for keeping me up way past my bedtime because 'just one more chapter' turned into finishing the whole book!
