Okay, so I just finished 'Ten Arguments for Deleting Your Social Media Accounts Right Now' and WOW. As someone who used to refresh Instagram every 5 minutes, this hit different.
The author Jaron Lanier (who actually helped create VR tech!) exposes how social media platforms are basically manipulating our brains. The part about how they engineer addiction? Chilling but so true - I'd catch myself mindlessly scrolling when bored instead of calling friends.
My favorite argument was #7: Social Media is Making You Less Empathetic. The book explains how algorithm bubbles prevent us from seeing different perspectives. Made me realize why political discussions online always turn toxic!
That said... the book isn't perfect. Lanier goes full nerd mode sometimes with tech jargon even my IT friend had to Google. And he doesn't really address practical alternatives - like how to stay in touch with overseas family without Facebook.
But here's the thing - after reading this, I actually deactivated my accounts for a week as an experiment. Best sleep I've had in years! Now I'm doing 'Social Media Sundays' where I only check platforms one day a week.
Would recommend to anyone who feels trapped by their phone but be warned - you might end up joining the #DeleteFacebook club!
