Okay, so I just finished Hidden Pictures and WOW. This book messed with my head in the best possible way. As someone who normally reads cozy mysteries, this was a wild departure - but I couldn't put it down!
The child's drawings throughout the book? CREEPY AF. Like, why is a five-year-old sketching dead bodies? The way the author incorporated actual drawings made everything feel so much more real and unsettling.
Mallory's character development was *chef's kiss*. Her struggle with addiction felt raw and authentic - not just some backstory tacked on for drama. I found myself rooting for her while simultaneously being terrified for her as Teddy's drawings got progressively darker.
That twist though?! I did NOT see that coming. I literally gasped out loud at 2AM (sorry neighbors). The way everything tied together at the end was masterful - even the parts that seemed supernatural at first had logical explanations (sort of).
Pro tip: Don't read this alone at night. Especially if you live near woods. And definitely don't look too closely at any children's drawings afterwards...
5/5 would recommend to anyone who loves psychological thrillers with a side of 'what-the-actual-f*ck'. Just maybe keep the lights on while reading.
