Okay, so I just finished Zachary Petit's freelance writing guide and WOW. As someone who's dabbled in writing but never took the plunge, this book feels like a friendly mentor giving you the real talk.
First off - it's NOT one of those dry instructional manuals. Petit writes with humor and personality, which makes the whole 'how to get paid for your words' thing feel way less intimidating. The chapter on query letters alone is worth the price.
What surprised me most? The business side advice. Like how to actually make this sustainable instead of just hoping magazines will throw money at you. The interview tips section is gold too - way more practical than I expected.
Only gripe? It's very US-focused. As a UK writer, some market advice doesn't quite translate. But the core principles? Universal. Already drafted my first proper pitch after reading!
If you're serious about freelancing (or even just curious), this is that rare book that's both inspiring AND actually useful. 5/5 would recommend to my fellow word nerds.
