I recently got my hands on these thermochromic pigments, and let me tell you, they’ve been a game-changer for my DIY projects. The color shift is like magic—watching the Red-Clear @88°F transform from vibrant red to translucent white under heat is mesmerizing. My first experiment was mixing it into epoxy for a resin ring, and the result was stunning. The red was so vivid, though I quickly learned that ‘clear’ means more of an opaque white—lesson learned!
One of my favorite uses so far has been creating custom nail polish with my daughter. We mixed the Yellow-Red @59°F pigment into clear top coat, and her nails shifted from sunny yellow to warm red just from her body heat. She couldn’t stop playing with them! The fact that it’s non-toxic made me feel safe letting her get creative.
I also tried the Black-Clear @77°F in a knife handle project—drizzling the pigmented epoxy over a semi-cured base created this incredible layered effect. When warmed, parts of the handle ‘disappear,’ revealing what’s underneath. It’s like having a secret design that only appears when you hold it!
The only disappointment was the Black-Pink variant—it stayed stubbornly purple instead of transitioning to pink as expected. Maybe it needs more heat than hands can provide? But the Black-Clear and Red-Yellow pigments more than make up for it with their dramatic transformations.
These pigments have opened up so many possibilities—from science experiments with kids to elevated resin art. Just be mindful of activation temperatures (77°F works great for skin contact projects). My next mission? Finding that mythical truly-clear pigment or maybe convincing the makers to create a Clear-Red @77°F version!
