Okay, so I just finished 'The Bones of Amoret' and WOW. This book grabbed me by the collar and didn't let go until the very last page.
At first I wasn't sure about the folksy Texas narration style, but Doc Noah's voice grew on me like sweet tea on a hot day. The way he tells this story - all these wild events from his past - feels like sitting on a porch swing listening to your grandpa spin yarns.
The characters? More colorful than a Texas sunset! Each one felt so real I kept forgetting they weren't actual people. And that ending? Didn't see it coming from a mile away - and I usually guess plot twists by chapter three!
What really got me was how Herbert blends small-town charm with some seriously dark secrets. One minute you're chuckling at some local quirk, next minute your jaw's on the floor. The pacing's perfect too - not too slow, not rushed, just right for soaking up that West Texas atmosphere.
Only complaint? Now I'm craving more books set in Amoret! If you like mysteries with heart, humor and a side of Southern Gothic, do yourself a favor and pick this one up.
