Just finished reading 'The Apple: A Delicious History' and wow, what a treat! The book itself feels so luxurious - thick pages, crisp print (though I wish there were some illustrations).
The author clearly has an apple obsession (relatable!) and packs every page with fascinating historical tidbits. Who knew ancient Greeks had so much to say about apples? The chapter on Britain's declining apple industry actually made me emotional - that poor orchard destroyed by a 'Tiger tank' machine!
Small gripe: some of the historical recipes are... questionable. Snail pomatum? Hard pass. Also disagree with their 'top 5' apple choices - any real orchardist knows Granny Smith doesn't deserve that spot!
Perfect gift for garden lovers or foodies. My Food Teacher friend adored it! While not the most practical apple guide, it's a delightful deep-dive into pomology history. Now excuse me while I go plant another tree...
