I've been using the Amazon Basics 6-in-1 USB-C Hub for about a month now with my MacBook Pro, and it's been... interesting. The compact grey rectangle looks sleek next to my laptop, but it's had some surprises.
The good first: When it works, it's magical. I can plug in my external monitor via HDMI and get crisp 4K resolution while simultaneously charging my laptop at 85W through the PD port. The Ethernet port delivers solid wired internet when I need stable Zoom calls.
But here's the weird part - not all USB ports play nice equally. My wireless mouse dongle works flawlessly in any port, but when I tried transferring photos from my camera? One USB-A port refused to recognize it entirely. The other worked fine though, which makes troubleshooting extra confusing.
The hub does get noticeably warm during heavy use - not burning hot, but definitely warmer than I expected. It hasn't caused any shutdowns, but I find myself unplugging it during lunch breaks just in case.
Biggest surprise? The USB-C passthrough charging is picky about cables. My 100W Anker charger works perfectly directly into the laptop, but through the hub? Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Yet my colleague's Dell charger works every time. Go figure.
For basic needs - adding a couple USB devices and Ethernet - it's been reliable enough that I keep it in my work bag. But for mission-critical transfers or presentations, I've learned to bring backup options just in case one of its ports decides to be moody that day.
