Okay, so I just finished 'The Frozen River' and wow - this book completely transported me to 18th century Maine! The way Ariel Lawhon brings Martha Ballard to life is just incredible.
What I loved most was how real Martha felt - she's this badass midwife who delivers babies by day and solves murders by... well, also by day honestly. The historical details about women's rights (or lack thereof) hit hard but felt so authentic.
The mystery had me hooked from the frozen river discovery scene. That moment when Martha examines the body? Chills (pun intended). I kept reading way past my bedtime because I needed to know whodunit.
Pro tip: Don't skip the author's note at the end! Lawhon's research into the real Martha Ballard adds such depth to the story. Also, fair warning - you'll want to hug this book when you finish it.
If you're into historical fiction with strong female leads and a side of murder mystery, this is your next must-read. Five frozen stars from me!
