Let me start by saying I was genuinely excited to install the Hive Smart Thermostat. The promise of controlling my home's temperature remotely and syncing it with my smart home ecosystem sounded like a dream. The installation process was surprisingly straightforward, especially after watching a quick YouTube tutorial on handling the 'C' wire (saved me hundreds!).
The thermostat itself feels premium – solid build, accurate temperature readings (I cross-checked with my saltwater tank probes), and the scheduling feature works like a charm once you get past the initial learning curve. Waking up to a perfectly heated home is now my new normal.
However, the Alexa integration is where things fall apart. There's this agonizing 10-15 second delay between giving a voice command and actual execution. I often find myself repeating commands thinking Alexa didn't hear me – only to have both commands execute later! The random temperature spikes are another headache – coming home to find my house at 63° when I clearly set it at 68° is not what I signed up for.
The separate hub requirement feels outdated in today's direct-to-WiFi world. While it does allow offline functionality (a lifesaver during internet outages), it's just another device cluttering my entertainment center. And let's not even talk about the complete failure of remote access through the app after just a few days of working perfectly.
Would I recommend it? If you're in the UK (since they've apparently stopped serving North America) and can tolerate some smart features being less than smart, maybe. But if seamless smart home integration is what you're after, you might want to look elsewhere.
