Just finished 'The Nightingale' and wow... where do I even begin? This book wrecked me in the best possible way. Kristin Hannah has created something truly special here.
The story follows two sisters in Nazi-occupied France, and let me tell you - I've never read about WWII from this perspective before. It's all about the women who stayed behind, the quiet heroes history often forgets.
Vianne broke my heart with her impossible choices. That scene where she has to decide whether to shelter Jewish children? I had to put the book down and just breathe for a minute.
And Isabelle! My rebellious queen! Her journey from angry teenager to resistance fighter had me cheering out loud (and getting weird looks from my cat).
The writing is so vivid I could smell the bread baking in occupied Paris one moment, then taste the fear when soldiers came knocking the next. Historical fiction at its absolute finest.
Fair warning: keep tissues handy. I cried ugly tears at least three times, especially during that ending (no spoilers but OMG).
10/10 would recommend to anyone who loves powerful stories about love, war, and what ordinary people are capable of in extraordinary times.
