Okay, so I just finished Foundryside and WOW. This book is like if Ocean's Eleven had a baby with magic-steampunk vibes. Sancia is my new favorite sarcastic thief – she's got this wild ability that's equal parts cool and terrifying.
The magic system? Mind-blowing. It's called 'scriving' and it's basically hacking reality. Carriages that move themselves, unbreakable locks – Tevanne feels like a weirdly advanced dystopian city where the rich hoard all the good magic-tech.
That mysterious object Sancia steals in chapter one? BEST PLOT TWIST. Can't spoil it but when you find out what it really is... chef's kiss.
Gregor and Orso add such great dynamics – one's this idealistic cop, the other's a grumpy genius scriver who probably needs more coffee. Their banter with Sancia had me cackling.
Fair warning: the last 200 pages are pure adrenaline. I stayed up till 3AM going 'just one more chapter' until suddenly the sun was coming up. Whoops?
Minor quibble: The middle drags a tiny bit when they're explaining all the scriving mechanics, but stick with it – the payoff is insane.
Already pre-ordered Book 2. If you like heists, unique magic systems, and protagonists who mouth off to villains, this is your next obsession.
