Okay, so I just finished 'Watchers' by Dean Koontz and WOW. This book had me hooked from the first chapter. It's part thriller, part sci-fi, and part heartwarming dog story—which honestly shouldn’t work but somehow does perfectly.
The main trio—Travis, Nora, and Einstein (the super-smart golden retriever)—are so well-written you feel like you’re right there with them. Einstein steals the show though; his intelligence and loyalty had me wishing I had a dog like him (minus the government conspiracy part).
The villain, 'The Outsider,' is legit terrifying. Koontz does an amazing job making you feel both fear and pity for this creature. The tension builds so well that I found myself reading way past my bedtime just to see what happens next.
What really got me were the quieter moments—Travis and Nora teaching Einstein to communicate using Scrabble tiles? Absolute genius. It’s those small, human (and canine) connections that make the high-stakes action even more gripping.
If you love books that mix suspense with emotional depth (and dogs!), this is a must-read. Fair warning: once you start, you won’t want to put it down.
