Just finished 'The Second Life of Mirielle West' and wow, what a journey! At first, I couldn't stand Mirielle - she was so unlikable. But Amanda Skenandore worked her magic, and by page 50, I was hooked. The character development is *chef's kiss*.
The setting at Carville? Absolutely immersive. I could practically smell the hospital corridors and feel the Louisiana heat. Skenandore's research shines through every page - it's clear she put her heart into this story.
Fair warning: keep tissues handy. This book took me on an emotional rollercoaster - one minute I'm furious at Mirielle, next minute I'm sobbing with her. That reunion scene after 16 years? Destroyed me.
While some parts dragged (hence 4 stars instead of 5), the ending packed such a punch. It's not your typical happily-ever-after, but it feels real and raw. Already planning to recommend this for my book club - so much to discuss about stigma, resilience, and human connection!
