Opening this DVD set felt like unearthing a treasure chest of childhood memories. The three classic horse movies bundled together - National Velvet, The Story of Seabiscuit, and Black Beauty - make for a perfect gift for any horse lover in your life.
The packaging arrived intact, though I did nervously check all discs immediately after reading some reviews about missing content. Thankfully, all three movies were present in my set. Sliding the discs into my player, I was instantly transported back to rainy Saturday afternoons watching these with my grandmother.
While the stories themselves remain as magical as ever (my niece gasped at the exact same Black Beauty scenes that made me cry as a kid), I have to agree with some reviewers about the inconsistent quality. The Story of Seabiscuit looks particularly grainy - not terrible for casual viewing, but certainly not restoration quality. National Velvet fared better, with decent contrast and clarity.
What surprised me most was how well these held up for multi-generational viewing. My 8-year-old nephew, who usually scoffs at 'old movies', got completely absorbed in Black Beauty's journey. Meanwhile, my elderly aunt remembered every line from National Velvet word-for-word.
The real value here is having three beloved classics in one affordable set. Just manage your expectations regarding visual quality - this isn't a Criterion Collection remaster by any means. For family movie nights or introducing young horse lovers to these timeless stories, it absolutely gets the job done.
