Okay, so I just finished 'Skinny Dip' and WOW - Carl Hiaasen has done it again! This book is like if Florida Man became a novel and I'm here for every ridiculous moment.
First off, Chaz Perrone might be the most hilariously terrible husband in literary history. Marine biologist? More like marine idiot. The scene where he pushes his wife Joey off the cruise ship had me gasp-laughing. And Joey's survival? Chef's kiss perfection - clinging to a bale of weed is SO Florida.
The revenge plot is deliciously slow-burn. Watching Joey and ex-cop Mick psychologically torture Chaz while he spirals into paranoid madness? *chef's kiss* The supporting cast is pure gold too - from the snake-toting detective to the agribusiness villain with the greatest name ever (Red Hammernut?!).
What I love most is how Hiaasen balances absurd humor with sharp environmental commentary. The Everglades pollution subplot adds surprising depth to all the hijinks. Though fair warning - don't read this in public unless you're cool with random snort-laughs attracting stares.
Only critique? I wanted more Mick/Joey scenes! Their chemistry was electric, especially that line about Mick being 'more attentive and enterprising' than her trash husband. More romantic tension next time please!
Final verdict: 4.5/5 stars for being the perfect beach read that also makes you think (while laughing at a grown man getting haunted by his own stupidity). Already ordering Hiaasen's backlist!
