Okay, so I just finished Griffin Dunne's memoir and WOW. As someone who's been low-key obsessed with him since discovering 'An American Werewolf in London', this book was everything I hoped for and more.
The way he writes about growing up in Hollywood royalty is wild - like imagine having childhood stories that involve Marlon Brando just casually dropping by your house?! Some people call it name-dropping, but when your life was literally like that, what are you supposed to do?
The most heartbreaking (but also beautiful) parts were about his sister Dominique. He writes about her with so much love - her quirks, her passions, the way animals adored her. It really makes you feel like you knew her, which makes what happened even more devastating.
Pro tip: Keep tissues handy when reading the sections about his brother Alex too. Had no idea about his struggles with mental health, and it adds such depth to understanding this fascinating family.
Also can we talk about how hilarious some parts are? Like his failed first marriage stories had me cackling. The man can WRITE - it feels like you're just chatting with a friend over drinks.
My only complaint? It ends in 1990! I need volume two STAT covering his directing career (Practical Magic fans unite!).
Seriously though - whether you're a longtime fan or just love a well-told family saga, this book delivers. 10/10 would recommend to anyone who enjoys memoirs that make you laugh one minute and ugly cry the next.
