When I first got my hands on the Kenwood ProTalk NX-P1200NVK, I was excited about its dual analog/digital capabilities and rugged build. The idea of migrating to digital at my own pace seemed appealing, especially for work in mixed environments.
The radio feels solid in hand, and the IP54/55 rating gives confidence for outdoor use. I particularly liked the large 7-color LED indicator - it's super helpful for quick status checks during hectic moments.
However, programming this device turned out to be a nightmare. The learning curve is steep, and the manual isn't as helpful as I'd hoped. Like another reviewer mentioned, you'll likely need to invest in additional units (at $300+ each) to make it truly useful.
Range performance was disappointing. In real-world testing between buildings on our worksite, communication became spotty at distances much shorter than advertised. For the price point, I expected better reliability.
The audio quality is decent when it works, with clear digital transmission when conditions are right. But considering you can get functional radios for a fraction of the price elsewhere, it's hard to justify this purchase unless you absolutely need its specific features.
