Let me start by saying Verity is NOT your typical Colleen Hoover book. If you're expecting a heartwarming romance, think again. This is a psychological thriller that grabs you by the throat and doesn't let go.
The story follows Lowen Ashleigh, a struggling writer hired to complete the bestselling series of famous author Verity Crawford after a tragic accident leaves Verity unable to write. What starts as a simple ghostwriting job quickly spirals into something much darker when Lowen discovers Verity's unpublished autobiography - and let me tell you, this manuscript will mess with your head.
I read this book in two sleepless nights because I physically couldn't put it down. The tension builds so masterfully that even mundane scenes like Lowen walking through the house had me checking over my shoulder. Hoover's writing makes you feel every ounce of Lowen's paranoia and fear.
The characters are brilliantly complex. Jeremy Crawford (Verity's husband) is equal parts charming and suspicious - I kept changing my mind about whether to trust him. And Verity... oh man, Verity might be one of the most disturbing characters I've ever encountered in fiction.
What makes this book special is how real it feels despite its extreme premise. The way Hoover writes about grief, obsession, and the dark side of motherhood hits uncomfortably close to home at times.
Fair warning: This book contains graphic content including child harm and psychological abuse that will disturb many readers (it certainly disturbed me). But if you can handle dark material, it's absolutely worth it for the mind-blowing twists alone.
The ending left me staring at my wall for a good 20 minutes trying to process what I'd just read. Even now, months later, certain scenes pop into my head at random moments - that's how deeply this story gets under your skin.
If you're looking for a thriller that will actually thrill you (not just mildly entertain), Verity delivers in spades. Just maybe don't read it alone at night...
