Okay, let me start by saying I DEVOURED this book in one sitting. Like literally forgot to eat dinner because I needed to know if Katniss would survive the tracker jacker nest. That's how hooked I was.
The concept is terrifyingly brilliant - kids forced to kill each other for entertainment? Chilling. But what got me was how REAL it felt. The way Collins writes about starvation and oppression in District 12? Gave me actual chills.
Katniss is everything I want in a heroine - tough as nails but still vulnerable. That scene where she volunteers for Prim? TEARS. And Peeta's whole 'star-crossed lovers' act had me screaming at my Kindle like 'NO DON'T FALL FOR IT GIRL!'
Some random thoughts: The world-building is insane (in a good way). From the creepy Capitol fashions to the muttations, everything feels so vivid. Also, Haymitch is my problematic fave - that drunk genius deserves his own prequel.
Warning: This isn't some fluffy YA romance. People DIE. Like graphically. But the violence serves the story - it shows how messed up Panem is.
Final verdict? 10/10 would recommend (unless you're squeamish). Already downloaded Catching Fire because I NEED to know what happens next!
