Okay, so I'm NOT a numbers person. Like, at all. But my side hustle was getting serious and QuickBooks looked like hieroglyphics. Cue panic.
Enter this little orange book that promised accounting in '100 pages or less.' Skeptical? Absolutely. But page 2 already had me nodding like 'Ohhh THAT'S what assets vs liabilities means!'
Highlights that saved my sanity:
- The 'Assets = Liabilities + Owner’s Equity' equation FINALLY made sense with their pizza shop example (now I see why my food truck's grill is an asset but the loan to buy it? Not so much)
- Cash flow vs profit? Mind blown. Turns out my 'profitable' months were actually me drowning in unpaid invoices.
- The GAAP section felt like learning the rules of Monopoly - suddenly all those corporate financial reports seem less scary.
Bonus: The index is crazy detailed. When my accountant mentioned 'accrual accounting,' I flipped right to page 73 instead of pretending to understand.
Warning: You'll finish this in one coffee shop session and immediately annoy friends by analyzing Starbucks' balance sheet online. Worth it.
