Wow. Just... wow. This book hit me like a ton of bricks in the best possible way. I picked it up after my therapist recommended it, and I wasn't prepared for how much it would change my perspective.
The way Dr. van der Kolk explains trauma as something stored in your whole body - not just your mind - was revolutionary for me. That moment when I read about how trauma literally rewires your brain? Mind blown emoji x1000.
What I loved most was how practical it is. It's not just theory - there are actual exercises and approaches you can try (hello, yoga for trauma recovery!). Though fair warning, some parts were tough to get through emotionally.
The science nerd in me geeked out over all the brain studies, while the human in me cried reading some of the patient stories. It's rare to find a book that's both deeply intelligent and deeply compassionate.
Would I recommend it? Absolutely - but maybe keep some tissues handy and take breaks when needed. This isn't light bedtime reading, but it might just change your life like it changed mine.
