Okay, so I just finished reading 'The Car' and wow—what a ride (pun totally intended). This book is like the ultimate teen boy fantasy: neglected kid, a sweet DIY car project, and a cross-country adventure with some wild characters. Terry’s resilience is low-key inspiring, even if his parents are the worst.
The Vietnam vets? Absolute legends. They bring this chaotic mentor energy that’s equal parts hilarious and profound. Sure, they introduce Terry to some… questionable life experiences (gambling dens? Ahem.), but it’s all part of the messy journey. The AIDS subplot felt random though—like why was that even there?
As for the ending… UGH. Classic Paulsen, leaving us hanging like a cliffhanger champ. No sequel in sight, just my imagination running wild about where Terry’s headed next. Still, 10/10 for making my car-obsessed little brother actually finish a book without whining.
P.S. Editors missed some periods? Seriously? Get it together.
