Let me start by saying I had high hopes for this Academy Award-winning documentary. The story of the Little Rock Nine is one of courage and pivotal change in American history. However, this 19-minute film falls painfully short of doing justice to these heroes.
The production quality is shockingly poor for an Oscar winner. The music sounds like cheap elevator tunes - completely mismatched for such an emotional historical moment. I kept waiting for the stirring soundtrack that would make me feel the tension and triumph, but it never came.
Watching this on my home theater system was particularly disappointing. The wooden acting and weak script made what should have been gripping storytelling feel tedious instead. At one point, my partner actually asked if we could turn it off because it was putting her to sleep!
Technical issues plagued my experience too. The DVD initially wouldn't play on either of my devices (a modern Blu-ray player and gaming console). After multiple attempts, it finally worked - but honestly, I almost wish it hadn't.
The only positive? It's historically accurate content you'd see at the Arkansas museum. But at this price point, you're better off watching free online documentaries about the Civil Rights Movement that actually do justice to these brave students' legacy.
