I’ve been using the Midland GXT1000VP4 walkie talkies for a few months now, and they’ve become my trusty sidekicks for outdoor adventures. The range is impressive—I’ve tested them in open desert terrain and got clear communication at nearly 8 miles, which blew me away. Inside my RV, the signal held up just as strong, which is a huge plus for emergency preparedness.
The NOAA weather alerts are a lifesaver. On a recent camping trip, the radio picked up a severe weather warning before my phone did. The automatic scan locked onto the strongest channel, and the alarm was loud enough to wake me up. For someone who spends a lot of time outdoors, this feature alone makes them worth it.
Battery life is decent with the included rechargeable packs, but I did switch to AAs for longer trips since they last noticeably longer. The desktop charger is convenient, though, and having both AC/DC options means I can power up anywhere.
Now, the headsets… not great. The ear loops are stiff and uncomfortable, and the mic placement is awkward unless you bend it aggressively. I ended up ditching them and using the radios handheld, which worked fine. Midland makes better accessories separately, so I’d recommend skipping the bundled headset.
For the price, these radios are unbeatable. Whether you’re coordinating a neighborhood watch (like some reviewers mentioned), hiking, or just need reliable comms in areas with spotty cell service, they deliver. Just temper expectations on range in dense urban or wooded areas—real-world use is closer to 1-3 miles there.
