Okay, let’s get this out of the way—I’m a DUNE FANATIC. Seen it in theaters, owned Beta, VHS, LaserDisc (RIP), and every DVD release. This 4K Blu-ray? It’s... complicated.
THE GOOD: When this transfer shines, it SHINES. The opening monologue? Crisp. Geidi Prime? Jaw-dropping. The water-of-life scene? Almost 3D-level depth. I spotted new details after decades of rewatching—that’s saying something.
THE BAD: Universal clearly half-a**ed the restoration. Dirt, scratches, and fade damage galore (especially in Fremen scenes). Baron Harkonnen looks like he fell into a pepto-bismol vat while Reverend Mother Mohiam channels Big Bird. And where’s the extended cut?!
SOUND: DTS-HD delivers epic worm rumbles but gets harsh during dialogue. BD-Live ads are invasive (seriously, who thought auto-playing ads OVER the menu was okay?). Extras? Worse than the 2005 DVD—no photo gallery, no booklet, just disappointment.
VERDICT: For $15? Worth it for the eye-candy moments. But calling this 'PERFECT' (as the cover does) is straight-up lies. Dune deserves better—just like we deserved more Fremen development in the runtime.
