Let's talk about the Insta360 X4 Premium Lens Guards. These little tempered glass protectors promise to shield your camera's lenses from bumps and scratches while improving image quality. But do they deliver? Here's my take after putting them through the wringer.
First, the good stuff: These guards are surprisingly sturdy. I took a nasty spill while skiing, and while the guard cracked (RIP), the actual lens was completely unharmed. That's exactly what they're designed to do - take the hit so your expensive camera doesn't have to. Installation is a breeze too - they click into place with satisfying precision.
But... (and there's always a but) they're not perfect. The biggest issue? They can be finicky to keep attached. I lost one during a motorcycle ride - the vibrations just shook it loose. And cleaning them? Forget about it. Micro dust clings to them like they're coated in glue, and wiping them down just smears the grime around.
At $30+ a pop, they're pricey for what they are. I've had better luck with silicone guards for everyday use - easier to handle and more forgiving. But for high-risk situations (think mounting on a car or extreme sports), these premium guards are worth having in your kit. Just maybe buy a few extras - they tend to crack when doing their job.
