This book is an absolute gem! From the first page, I was hooked on Virginia Hall's incredible story. The way Sonia Purnell writes makes you feel like you're right there with Virginia, dodging Nazis and outsmarting the Gestapo. It's part history, part thriller, and all heart.
One of the standout aspects for me was how Virginia overcame not just the enemy, but also the sexism of her time. The fact that she did all this with a prosthetic leg is mind-blowing. There's a particular scene where she organizes an escape route that had me holding my breath - the tension is that real!
The research is impeccable. Purnell doesn't just tell us Virginia was brave; she shows us through meticulously documented operations and personal accounts. You can tell the author lived with this story for years before writing it.
That said, the book isn't perfect. Some sections do get bogged down in details, and the sheer number of names and locations can be overwhelming at times. I found myself flipping back occasionally to remember who was who.
What makes this special is how it balances the big picture of war with intimate moments. There's a heartbreaking passage where Virginia has to abandon her beloved dog that still sticks with me weeks after finishing the book.
If you're looking for a WWII book that goes beyond the typical narratives, this is it. Virginia Hall's story deserves to be told, and Purnell does her justice. Just be prepared - once you start, you won't want to put it down!
