After months of using the Sony UBP-X700M, I can confidently say it's a great mid-range 4K Blu-ray player. The picture quality is stunning, especially with HDR10 and Dolby Vision support. My 4K discs look crisp, and even regular Blu-rays get a nice boost when upscaled.
Setting it up was a breeze. It auto-detects most settings, though I had to tweak a couple manually. The remote is responsive and easy to use, which is a big plus for my tech-challenged family members.
However, it does have some quirks. The player can be picky about disc insertion – you need to follow its 'ritual' (close the tray properly, stop before changing operations) to avoid hiccups. The placement of the USB port right below the power/eject buttons is comically bad – I've accidentally turned it off multiple times while plugging in a flash drive.
File playback is excellent, handling almost every video format I've thrown at it. The only exception was some obscure audio formats, but that's a minor issue.
One thing to note: early on, I experienced a frustrating bug where certain Blu-rays wouldn't display properly. After several software updates, this issue completely disappeared. Now it plays everything flawlessly.
While it's not perfect, the UBP-X700M delivers excellent value for its price point. Just be prepared for some minor operational quirks – once you learn its preferences, it's a reliable performer.
