I picked up RICH MEN, DEAD MEN expecting just another detective novel, but boy, was I wrong. From the first chapter, DI Simon Wise's sharp wit and the gritty London setting pulled me in like a magnet.
The pacing? Absolutely relentless. I found myself sneaking in chapters during lunch breaks and staying up way past bedtime because 'just one more chapter' turned into half the book. The twists aren't just clever - they're gut-punch surprises that made me gasp out loud on my commute (earning some weird subway stares).
What really stood out was how the London streets became a character themselves. The author paints neighborhoods with such vivid detail that I could smell the rain on cobblestones and hear the Tube rumbling beneath crime scenes. Simon's team feels refreshingly real too - flawed, funny, and frustrating in all the right ways.
Fair warning though: that cliffhanger ending left me immediately pre-ordering Book 2. This isn't just a whodunit - it's the start of an addiction to Wise's world.
