Just finished reading American Dirt and wow, what a rollercoaster of emotions! This book isn't just a story - it's an experience that stays with you long after the last page.
The way Cummins writes about Lydia and Luca's journey is so vivid it feels like you're right there with them. That scene on La Bestia? My heart was pounding like I was climbing onto that train myself!
What really got me was how the book makes you think about privilege. Like, I'll never truly understand what it means to flee for my life, but this story brought me closer to that reality than anything else I've read.
The characters feel so real - especially those two sisters from Guatemala. Their struggles hit me hard. And don't get me started on Javier... such a complex villain!
Fair warning: this isn't an easy read. There are moments that'll make you want to throw the book across the room (in a good way). But it's 100% worth pushing through.
Already recommended it to my book club and we're planning a whole themed dinner night with Mexican food to discuss it properly!
