So I finally got my hands on the FreeNAS Mini (diskless version) and wow, this little beast is packed with features! The 8-core Intel Atom processor and 16GB ECC RAM make it feel like a mini-server rather than just a NAS. The build quality is solid—definitely not your average plastic NAS box.
Setting it up was... an adventure. If you're expecting plug-and-play, this ain't it. You'll need to roll up your sleeves and dive into FreeNAS and ZFS docs. But once you get the hang of it, the flexibility is insane—datasets, snapshots, compression, and even running VMs or Docker (with some tinkering).
Hardware-wise, the hot-swap bays are super convenient, though the lack of detailed drive installation instructions had me guessing at first (protip: press the circular button!). Performance over dual gigabit NICs is smooth, especially with WD Reds inside.
Now for the downsides: Support can be hit or miss. The forums are helpful but sometimes feel like arguing with a grumpy sysadmin. Also had a scare when my SATA DOM failed—mirroring is a MUST. And yeah, FreeNAS updates can be buggy (looking at you, 11.2).
Verdict? If you love tech and want enterprise-grade features in a compact form, this rules. But if you just want simple storage, maybe stick with Synology.
